I don't think you have to be altruistic. Not to mention it's hard to be, when you're in battle. [when you fight, you're inherently doing it for something you selfishly believe in - or it may just be for your own life, ahead of everyone else's.]
But if it's to repay debts, and to support those you care about - that's as good a reason as any.

I think that it's fine to try to be - but I'm not saying everyone has to be at all times. Sometimes people just need to do what it takes to survive.

I don't know anyone who's never caused any problems - whether by accident or otherwise. It keeps things interesting, doesn't it? Those surprises.
