We remember our histories - for swords with more important legacies, they can even have strong attachments to their masters or specific events.
[that's not him, but for pretty much every sword, that's the case,, but he's laughing now]
Another one of the Gous - Kuwana - one of his masters was a farmer, before he was given to a noble family. So I actually like that his passion is for farming and tending to the crops, more than battle. He takes care of a lot of harvesting for the Citadel, and I'll help out when he asks.
Items being infused with the history they experience. That’s new.
[ if his rifle turned into a human, what the heck would it have to say about everything? other than get some therapy, idiot. ]
And the Citadel’s where you live? [ he is now imagining some kinda italian architecture building with a bunch of swords tilling the land. lovely. ] Sounds like a pretty handy thing to remember, if you’re going to remember all of history. A era of farming’s actually kinda useful.
Haha, tsukumogami are a pretty common folk tale in Japan, but I guess where you're from doesn't have the same concept?
[but he smiles easily regardless, nodding along]
Mm! It's just whatever we witness in our time - most swords have some period with humans, but the longer they last and the more revered they are, the more likely they are to be kept in storage or museums. When the era of swords is over, then it gives us a little less time to fulfill our purpose...
[but in the end, he shrugs. it's not like it's something that can be helped.]
Guess that's why it feels like a treasure to get an opportunity to have a body of our own at all.
Nope. People might think something’s haunted, but stories about spirits are usually for the fear factor. [ would buzen love those halloween horror nights at universal? ]
…
[ his eyes go a little wider at that. just a little. ]
Even the swords you see in museums? Hold on — this is all swords, no exception that have their own sense of self? Or just the ones you see that are named and have a history behind them? [ he’s not like. a researcher of japanese swords but he’s been to a museum before and knows what to expect from them. ]
[buzen would be a scarer at those things because he's a fucking gremlin, he seems so well-behaved but he's got a playful streak
anyway,]
The swords you see in the museums - be nice to them, yeah? They probably miss being among people more closely. Those ones for sure probably have spirits. Some of the ones in our Citadel are those named swords.
As for the others... [he looks thoughtful for a moment, then smiles as if enjoying a private little joke] Even unnamed ones can, depending on their age. A hundred years is a good estimate, I think.
[ buzen as that clown getting the person to tie their shoelace but he’s being genuinely supportive and not at all scary. just vibrating off the walls because THEY’RE DOING IT THEY’RE WINNING ]
I don’t go to museums, usually. You’ve never thought of getting them out of there?
[ alas. ]
So, it’s age. Not who made them or how. [ if he ever comes across a katana in the wild he’s going to have the urge to wave at it and now it’s going to be awkward. ]
We gotta follow our missions and besides... I think even those moments - that makes a sword who they are. If they're remembered and treasured enough to be put in a museum. Some of my comrades were broken or lost... that's part of them too.
[though there is also a trauma that comes with both, though buzen won't bring down the mood too badly,,]
Mm. There are famous Smiths out there though, and it's more likely that those will be treasured. Sanjou school is one, most of Gou school is another...
[nodding! his missions. also nodding along with the character building. it's fucked up but it's true.
though at the mention of the two of them, he laughs.]
Oh yeah, Matsu for sure. He's got this really pretty scabbard - all red. It's why he can be particular about his appearance, even if the rest of him is a little funny.
[ honestly? thank god. scarecrow would cry and shu would get a stress hernia ] But there are a lot of you that have people you know here. Wonder how much of that is coincidence.

So… keeping a sword locked behind glasses potentially for the rest of days is character building?
[ interesting. you do you, swords. but interesting. ]
Oh. So you and Matsui are considered higher… quality? Prestige? Because of who made you.

Please continue to get along with him - he's really kind.

Not speaking from a place of bias there, or anything.

It might be a little hard to believe, but I'm not.
I've got comrades that I'd still say are good, but I wouldn't say they're kind. They can be strict or unyielding.
Matsu... he really is soft. He thinks more thoughtfully and cares more than anybody else.

Well, it's not really your responsibility or anything - but if you could at least have patience for him. That's all I can ask.

I don’t have any reason not to. He’s been fine to talk to.

It's possible that Matsu and I got sent out on a mission together... But I do wonder for everybody else.

It could be, but… I was around someone last I remember. And she’s not here.

[he sounds relieved on shu's behalf]
Is she important to you...?

She’s one of my housemates. [ …. he snorts, but it’s not dismissive. ] She’s family-ish.

[with a sense of understanding]
You must miss her, though.
