I'm not lying. I wouldn't do that. But I think that your heart was in the right place, and so I won't call it a mistake. I think that there are accidents that happen as a result... but your desire to help others isn't wrong.
[and he'll shake his head at that - ]
No. I get hurt the same as anyone else. This body even has a heart that works like a humans - it aches, and wants.
But it's not suffering for me to accept harm in place of others. I think it's just... what I was forged to do.
[He pauses for a moment as he listens to Buzen's gushing, and then when he has a moment he speaks up again, albeit a bit more quietly.]
I was born to save others. When push comes to shove, I have to be the one holding the line and giving everyone else a chance to get to safety. I have to be the one diving in to save the lost child, or the injured person. That's my purpose: do what I can for the sake of others.
.... we might be closer in that sense than you might be comfortable with, Atsu-san. [because buzen gets it. he does.] Swords are forged to protect, and to kill. I want to serve people, because that's what's expected of me.
But I'm not sure what'll happen, if it ends up being you and me out there on a burning bridge. I don't think you'll listen to me if I tell you to leave me.
[ . . . for some reason, that didn't occur to him. it shows in the slight raise of his eyebrows - but his lips curve into a smile regardless.
there will always be a part of him that thinks that he must protect humans. there will always be the part that whispers into his ear that he will choose them over him, every single time
[It's funny, he never expected to find someone who thinks so similarly to him. It makes him wonder what kind of life Buzen has led up to this point.
But he doesn't ask about that, and instead just smiles and raises up his hand. He's going for a fist-bump but doesn't realize that some people here don't know what fist-bumps are.]
Teamwork sounds better than working alone, yeah. You can count on me, got it? And I'll count on you too.
[the fortunate thing is that buzen has witnessed a fist-bump, so that's not hard for him to pick up on! though he still manages a grin and a little novel - ] Oh, never done this before.
[before he just bumps his fist against atsushi's, a confident little knock]
Yeah. I'm glad we get a chance to work together, Atsu-san. Even if this place gets kinda rough, I'm really happy I've had the chance to meet you.
[Those are words Atsushi really doesn't hear often, and he finds a warmth blooming in his chest as a result. It's a little embarrassing, but Atsushi thinks he likes this feeling of friendship and acceptance. He likes it a lot.]
... really? But you talked so fondly of your home... Yokohama, right? I mean - I figure it's hard for humans to manage one way or another, that's just life.
But I'd think people might be a little kinder to you... You're a pretty thoughtful person.

[Hmm. Now there's an interesting thought.
Since the talk is getting a bit more serious, Atsushi will move so that he's sitting up instead of laying down all sprawled out.]
Humans have that too, you know. We're all born to do something special. Something we can do that gives our lives meaning.

Mm. That sounds right to me. I think it's amazing what humans are capable of. The ways that legacies can be left behind in history...
It's really amazing!

But I wouldn't listen to you either.

[Something something teamwork.]
If you're built to protect and I'm born to save, then that means we would be strong allies, right?

.... I like the sound of that.

Mmm, me too.
Thanks for being such a good friend, Buzen.

[even after their little fistbump, he'll just shift so that he can lightly lean some of his weight against atsushi in a friendly bump]
You deserve good friends and comrades. I want to see you happy, too.

[They're even leaning together like bros, it's awesome.
And if Buzen wants to see him happy, then Atsushi is pretty happy right now.
Up until that pizza party on Sunday whew]no subject

[It's. A lot complicated. And needs several content warnings when it comes up.]
But I would like it, to be surrounded by kind people.

[buzen will tilt his head to affectionately bonk his against atsushi's, offering up a grin]
At least, you'll always be welcome with me if you need a friend.

With a friend like you, I would say it's a good start.
